MANY WORLDS

In these new paintings Alison Berry continues her exploration of symbols and the worlds they evoke. Citing the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics - in which all possible worlds can and do exist in parallel Universes - Berry probes the idea in terms of the phenomenon of human consciousness.

Berry weaves a complex web of symbols on top of symbols, images on top of images. Diaphanous veils of color solidify and dissipate as figure becomes ground and ground becomes figure. In several paintings large contours of animals anchor and encompass many smaller worlds described in intimate detail, suggesting the complex interaction of outer experience with inner psychological reality.
